Is it wrong to doubt God?

Somewhere along the road, many believers pick up a heavy load: a loss that made no sense, a prayer that seemed to go unanswered, a fire they did not light. And under that load, a terrible question forms. Then a second weight lands on top of the first: the fear that the question itself is a sin, that a real believer would not be asking it.

Let me say to you what I say in the book: within the radius of the cross there is room for the believer whose load has pressed out a terrible question. A doubt addressed to the Center is still inside the circle. There is all the difference in the world between a doubt carried to God and a doubt carried away from Him, and Scripture is not shy about showing us which kind He welcomes.

John the Baptist, of whom Jesus said none born of women was greater, sat in prison and sent messengers to ask: “Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?” (Matthew 11:3). The forerunner himself, doubting from a dungeon. And Jesus did not scorch him. He sent back evidence and then turned to the crowd and praised him to the skies. The doubter’s reputation was safer in Jesus’ mouth than in ours.

Thomas said he would not believe unless he put his finger in the print of the nails. A week later Jesus came through a shut door, and notice what He did first:

He did not lecture first. He offered His wounds to the man’s honest conditions, and Thomas fell at His feet with the highest confession in the Gospels: “My Lord and my God.” A carried doubt became the doorway to the deepest worship in the room.

And the father of the tormented boy prayed the most human prayer in the Bible, the one many of us have prayed without knowing it was Scripture: “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief” (Mark 9:24). Jesus answered that mixed prayer with a whole miracle. He did not wait for the mixture to be purified first.

So: is it wrong to doubt God? It is wrong to feed doubt in the dark, to let it dress up as sophistication and keep it from ever meeting the evidence of the cross. But the honest question, carried into His presence and set down at His feet, is not rebellion. It is one of the forms faith takes when faith is bleeding. Bring it to Him whole. He has wounds enough to answer it, and patience enough to wait while you look.
